Insulation Saves Money

Environmental responsibility is everyone's responsibility, think green!

Green EnergyConsider these green, energy efficient options to insulate your home.

A product is considered green if one of more of these definitions applies: it contains a high percentage of recycled materials, it doesn’t contain harmful substances that can cause health problems, or it’s made of natural materials.

Whatever your definition of green, the best way to quantify how well insulation works is by its R-value, which measures its resistance to heat flow, typically in the range from R-1 to R-60. The more the material restricts the flow of heat, the higher its R-value, which means it insulates more effectively.

To lower your energy bills you must reduce the amount of power you use to heat and cool your home. That means you have to minimize the amount of heat that escapes during the winter and limit the ability of hot summertime air to penetrate your nicely cooled house. So it’s important to choose the right insulation product for each application, correctly install the proper amount of insulation, then make sure you seal out all air infiltration and ventilate as needed. Those are the main elements required for an effective insulation job, one which will save you energy, plus make your home much more comfortable year around.

Cellulose insulation

Cellulose is a green insulation product that has been around for years and is still very popular, especially for (retro-fit) re-insulating homes. Cellulose is a very affordable product which is made from 80% recycled newspaper and the chemicals that hold it together do not use formaldehyde. The addition of fire-retardant chemicals makes cellulose a safe product for home insulation.

Fiberglass insulation

Fiberglass has received a green makeover from Owens Corning, the well respected manufacturer of pink fiberglass insulation. Their EcoTouch™ insulation is a more eco-friendly product, certified to include a minimum of 50% total recycled content. EcoTouch™ also contains more than 99% natural ingredients and is Greenguard verified to be formaldehyde free.

Spray Foam insulation

Spray foam leads the field as the most technologically advanced and efficient form of insulation. Spray foam fits precisely into crevices and irregular areas which makes for double the R value per inch of traditional batts. Soy based spray foams cost a little more than other insulation options, but they will never sag or settle and you get more value per square inch for the area you cover.

HEATLOK SOY® is a closed cell spray polyurethane foam insulation that is a very environmentally-friendly product because it's created from recycled plastic materials and renewable soy oils. This helps to more efficiently utilize the world’s nonrenewable resources. It uses a blowing agent (HFC 245FA) which is approved by EPA for the protection of the environment because it has a zero ozone depletion potential. HEATLOK SOY® is one of the most effective insulating materials available in the world.

HEATLOK SOY® spray foam efficiently insulates and improves the total performance of the building in a single application; it actually creates an air, moisture and vapor barrier, plus it permanently bonds to the surface adding to the structural integrity of the building. HEATLOK SOY® can reduce excess waste and energy consumption in buildings by up to 50%. By using HEATLOK SOY® it’s possible to reduce the size of your HVAC equipment. This closed-cell spray foam will even offer excellent performance in areas where the relative humidity level exceeds 55%, because it has the advantage of also being a moisture/vapor barrier.
